The European Institute of the Law Faculty of the University of Lisbon was created by deliberation of the Scientific Council of the Faculty in 15th of July, 1985. Its statute has changed and it has become a non-profit association since 2000.

It is, therefore, the oldest institute created at the Law Faculty. It is located in the building of the Law Faculty of the University of Lisbon.
