The Institute

Instituto Europeu da Faculdade de Direito de Lisboa (FDL) was created by deliberation of the Scientific Council of the Faculty in 15th of July, 1985. In 2000, the statute of the Institute has changed and since then it is a non-profit association. It is, therefore, the oldest institute created at the FDL. It is located in the building of this Faculty.

Since the beginning, its purpose is to promote and stimulate the knowledge, research and reflection in European integration studies.

The European Institute, in accordance with its statutory purpose, runs several activities, in particular:

  • Organization of an annual post-graduation Course in European Studies;
  • Gives administrative support to the Chairs Jean Monnet, the European Centre of Excellence and the European Module of The University of Lisbon;
  • Gives support to investigation and teaching on European integration issues;
  • Organization of seminars and conferences on legal, economic and political issues of the European integration;
  • Publication of several books on European issues;
  • Cooperation with ECSA World, European Community Studies Associations, and ECSA-Portugal (AREP – Associação Interuniversitária de Estudos Europeus) and ECSAs form other countries;
  • Cooperation with universities from other countries, mostly through interchange of Professors;
  • Cooperation with the selection process of students for the Diploma of European Studies of the University Panthéon-Sorbonne.

The contribution of the European Institute to the support and promotion of the investigation on legal, economical, political and historical issues of the European integration has raised and resulted, in particular, in the publication of several papers and the publication of a specialized journal, Revista de Estudos Europeus.

The involvement of the European Institute in the European integration study has evolved and is today even more focused on the interdisciplinary and multilateral character of the activities it chooses to develop such as international conferences.

The evolution of the European integration process leads the Institute to make an additional effort in the area of the academic cooperation, if possible, in both sides of the Atlantic. The training courses will in the future involve other institutions, academic and professional, national and from abroad.
